Coast Road Shared Path Complete and Changes to the Coastal Trail

26 May 2026

Moonta Bay and Port Hughes are now connected, following completion of the Coast Road Shared Path, providing a safe, accessible, and enjoyable walking and cycling route, encouraging active transport and strengthening the connection between these two popular coastal destinations.

The shared path is another important achievement for accessibility in the Copper Coast in alignment with Council’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan. It allows all residents and visitors a safe and convenient way to travel on a sealed, compliant and accessible alternate pedestrian and cyclist route in close proximity to the coastline between Moonta Bay and Port Hughes.

Following completion of the Coast Road Shared Path, Council considered and determined to close the existing Coastal Trail, a cliff top pedestrian path between Harry’s Point and Simms Cove developed many years ago as a walking track providing coastal views and recreational access.
While scenic, the path is unsealed and situated close to the cliff edge, presenting inherent risk, particularly due to erosion. Native remnant vegetation has also been affected by thoroughfare.

Having previously undertaken very successful coastal vegetation and dune system restoration projects, Council will work with environmental partners to explore suitable options to remediate the section of coastline which align with its Draft Coastal Adaption Plan.

The closure of the trail does not affect beach access in any way, with existing ramp access at Simms Cove car park, and stair access at Harry’s Point to remain open to the public.

The Coast Road Shared Path now provides a valuable connection between Moonta and Port Hughes while preserving the inherent natural beauty that makes the Copper Coast so special.

Changes to the Coastal Trail

  • Approximately 380m of the existing coastal trail is proposed to be permanently removed.
  • Public beach access will remain available via the Simms Cove beach access ramp and stairs, and the Harry’s Point beach access stairs.
  • Coastal revegetation and environmental restoration works are proposed following closure of the trail.
