We are improving safety, access and road amenity for road users within the Wallaroo Township
The project is jointly funded by the State Government and Copper Coast Council.
Project
After many years of advocating, Copper Coast Council are anticipating that works to fix the Wallaroo entrance road section of Copper Coast Highway are imminent. In a joint project with Copper Coast Council, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) is planning to undertake pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing works in several deliberate planned stages beginning soon.
- Copper Coast Highway (Kadina Road) Bowmans Road to Athena Drive
- Victoria Street and Mays Crossing Athena Drive to Hughes Street
- Hughes Street (Spencer Highway) May Crossing to Wildman Street
- Irwine Street - Spencer Highway Hughes Street to Ernest Terrace
Council is aware that this has been an ongoing process, and we share the communities frustrations. Council acknowledges that it is important to improve this section of road for the thousands of tourists who traverse this major entrance thoroughfare annually, for ambulance drivers with precious cargo who have long avoided this section when possible, and for the local residents of Wallaroo.
Agreement Between Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) and Copper Coast Council
An Agreement between the Council and the SA Government has been approved to upgrade a section of the Copper Coast Highway as well as Irwine Street, Hughes Avenue, Bowman Road, Sharples Road, Magazine Road, Victoria Road and Owen Terrace. Works to be completed on the Copper Coast Highway (from Beare Road to East Terrace) include asphalt sealing, stormwater improvements and a kerb replacement, while upgrades planned for Irwine Street, Hughes Avenue and Victoria Street sections include asphalt sealing and kerb replacement where required. These roads are currently owned by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT), and negotiations are continuing with the Council regarding a potential road swap after the upgrade project is complete. Upgrades to Council-owned roads such as Bowman, Sharples and Magazine include pavement improvements and deep-lift asphalt where required. Owen Terrace will also receive an upgrade with asphalt sealing and kerb replacement where needed. Upgrades to these key roads are part of the Wallaroo Entrance Road project.
What’s happening
We are undertaking pavement rehabilitation and resurfacing work on a number of roads within the township of Wallaroo to improve safety and access. Work will commence from Monday 8 September 2025 and is expected to be complete in April 2026, weather permitting. For more information on specific work areas, please see the work zone map overleaf.
How this affects you
To keep everyone safe, there will be changes to traffic conditions. Please take care when travelling through the area and follow the directions of traffic controllers. Speed and lane restrictions will be in place and will remain in place as required until all works are complete. Short term local detours will be required at times, onsite signage will guide you to alternative routes. Pedestrians and cyclists might also need to use different paths during these works. Where required, signage will be in place to direct you to alternative routes. Access to businesses will be maintained however some short-term parking restrictions may be required. If there is a need for short-term access impacts, we will contact you directly in advance.
Access to bus stops will be maintained throughout the works. Some bus stops may be temporarily relocated during works, please visit www.adelaidemetro.com.au for the latest information. Some noise disturbance can be expected, however works will be planned and managed to minimise disturbance to nearby residents and businesses as much as practically possible. Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained at all times. We thank you for your patience while we undertake these important works.
