Overview

The Wallaroo Bollard Project is a community-led public art initiative developed by the Wallaroo Community Development Association (WCDA), with support from the Copper Coast Council and funding from the Federal Government.

Inspired by the Geelong Bollards in Victoria, this project aims to celebrate Wallaroo's unique character and community spirit through a series of sculptural timber bollards.

Project Purpose and Bollard Design

This project is about storytelling through art - capturing the essence of Wallaroo in a creative and engaging way.

The bollards will be placed in key public locations and designed to reflect aspects of Wallaroo's identity, such as:

  • maritime activities
  • historical moments and milestones
  • agriculture & fishing
  • mining/smelting
  • indigenous cultural stories and traditions
  • recreation/sport
  • local identities
  • native flora and fauna

WCDA have engaged local artist Debbie Seater to assist with concept designs to support the vision of the project. Please see these concept designs further down the page.

Each bollard will stand approximately 1900mm above ground and be crafted from timber, including recycled jetty pylons where possible. The bollards will be shaped and painted in place, with final designs informed by community feedback.

Approved Locations

Council has approved three locations for installation:

  1. Lot 502 John Terrace (North-Western boundary)
  2. Lot 502 John Terrace (Western central boundary)
  3. Lot 502 John Terrace (South-Eastern boundary)

Each site will feature a small cluster of 3–4 bollards.

Community Involvement

We want to hear from you! What parts of life in Wallaroo would you like to see reflected? Cornish history? Copper Mining? Swimming, fishing and beach activities? Wildlife of the Yorke Peninsula? Your input will help shape the final designs and ensure the bollards reflect the stories and values of our community.

How You Can Participate:

Let us know - do you like the initial concepts? Want to see something different? Use the survey at the bottom of this page to:

  • Share your ideas for themes, characters, or wildlife to be represented
  • Suggest local stories, trades, or community icons
  • Contribute creative ideas for how the bollards could reflect Wallaroo's identity

*All suggestions must fit within the scope of the project and achievable by the various community groups who have offered their assistance with this project to be considered.

Next Steps

Following this consultation, the artist will develop a Project Brief outlining the final designs, which will be reviewed by Council before installation begins.
