Background
Moonta Mines, located on Narungga Country and adjoining the township of Moonta, is part of the State Heritage listed Australian Cornish Mining Sites: Burra and Moonta. The Moonta Mines site holds significant heritage value, showcasing the transfer of Cornish mining technology, skills and culture to Australia. With its unique historical assets and strong tourism appeal, Moonta Mines is a key destination within the Copper Coast region.
In March 2025, the Copper Coast Council endorsed the creation of the Moonta Mining Heritage Master Plan to guide future opportunities and promote the long-term sustainability of the Moonta Mines site.
The aims of the Plan are to provide:
- Strategic recommendations: Set out clear recommendations for the management, enhancement and future opportunities of Moonta Mines. This will provide the basis for budget allocations, targeted investment and applications for grant funding, ensuring resources and efforts are in alignment with the shared vision.
- Priority projects: Identify key projects that require detailed design, further investigation and/or feasibility assessment, allowing the Council to pursue funding and delivery in a structured and timely manner.
- Defined management arrangements: Provide certainty and accountability in governance and management of the Site and define how decisions are made by the various stakeholders.
Your feedback is sought to provide valuable insight and direction in developing the master plan, ensuring the process is reflective of community priorities for future uses at Moonta Mines. The Moonta Mining Heritage Master Plan will be a valuable resource for future stakeholder engagement, ensuring alignment in direction.
